About the directory and maps
prideinplace.uk is an independent directory. The area pages bring together the government’s published selection records, local board or council information where we can verify it, and an approximate map of the selected geography.
The directory is published by Cool Unlimited. We also build websites, but that does not affect which local sites are listed: there is no listing fee and links are included on the same basis regardless of supplier.
Where the area records come from
Area names, accountable local authorities and selection phases come from MHCLG’s published Pride in Place selection material. Each area page links directly to the official source used for that record.
Some places are described locally by a different or more familiar name. Where we can verify that, the area page shows the local name as well as the published selection name and links to the source.
How local links are checked
We look for a maintained page that is useful to residents: preferably a neighbourhood board website or a council page for the specific area. Where that is not available, we may link to a wider council Pride in Place page. News stories, expired consultations and committee-only pages are not used as substitutes for a maintained local information page.
Every listed link shows the date it was last checked. A checked link means we verified that the destination was reachable and appeared to belong to the relevant board, council or programme. It is not an accessibility audit or an endorsement, and a missing link does not mean that a local website does not exist.
How the area maps are made
The maps are independent reproductions made from published geography data. Phase 1 selections are matched to 2022 Built-up Areas; Phase 2 and expansion selections use 2021 Middle layer Super Output Areas. They are useful for orientation, but they are not authoritative local boundaries and should not be used to decide whether a particular address is included.
Boundaries come from the Office for National Statistics Open Geography Portal. Phase 2 MSOA name matching uses the House of Commons Library’s MSOA names dataset. Basemaps are generated from the OS Maps API Outdoor OpenData layer in British National Grid. The map images are generated during the site build process; the OS API key is not shipped to browsers.
If a board or council publishes a newer or more precise local boundary, use that local source in preference to our map.
